FIRST AFRICAN-AMERICAN JOINS THE LPGA
Althea Gibson joins the LPGA at the age of 37 after a steller tennis career. In 1957 she was ranked #1 in women's singles. Gibson's highest rank on the LPGA tour was 27th in 1966 and best finish was 2nd at the Len Immke Buick Open in Columbus, Ohio. -
ALICE DYE DESIGN
Alice Dye, who was later to become the first women to be invited to join the American Society of Golf Course Architects, designs the first set of complete forward tees at Crooked Stick G.C.in Indianapolis, Indiana. -
FIRST NATIONALLY TV US WOMEN'S OPEN
Carol Mann won the 1965 U.S. Women's Open in Atlantic City. This was the first U.S. Open scheduled for four days since 1952. Prior the 3rd and 4th round were played on Saturday. The final round on Sunday was the first time the Women's Open had been nationally televised. -
RENEE POWELL JOINS THE LPGA
Renee Powell was the second African-American woman ever to play on the LPGA Tour. Powell competed in more than 250 professional golf tournaments and won the Kelly Springfield Open in Brisbane, Australia. She became one of the first female members of the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews inn February 2015. Powell is currently head professional at her family’s Clearview Golf Club in East Canton, Ohio. -
THE COLGATE-DINAH SHORE WINNERS CIRCLE
Tournament debut on the LPGA Tour offering $110,000. The first six-figure purse in women's golf. Jane Blalock shot a 54-hole total of 213 to win. Blalock earned $20,000 for her victory, which was $15,000 more than any other LPGA tournament winner was awarded that year. Blalock told the “Los Angeles Times” in 2011. “That moment for us was 40 years ago” at Dinah Shore's tournament. -
