  • Begins serious spiritual search

    Around December of this year, Carey’s conscience was greatly disturbed because of his own attempted deceit. The Spirit used this time to convict Carey of his need for the salvation offered by Christ.
  • Baptized by Dr. Ryland

    He was baptized by Dr. John C. Ryland in the
    Nen river of Northampton. It is also around this time that he became more
    involved in preaching and teaching God’s Word.
  • ublishes An Enquiry on missions; preaches “Expect great things, attempt great things” sermon

    The “expect great things, attempt great things”
    sermon was arguably Carey’s best sermon, and was based on the idea from Isaiah 54:2,
    3 that the people of God should do both of those things for God and His glory. His Enquiry became one of the most significant pieces of literature in regard to the modern
    missions movement.
  • Commissioned as missionary to Bengal; Arrives in India

    Carey and his two children boarded and English ship taking them from London to Calcutta. His wife was currently pregnant with their third child. She waited until she gave birth to her child before joining them on the mission. When they arrived in Calcutta, India, they began learning the language and starting ministry.
  • Completes draft of Bengali New Testament

    Carey saw the importance of the people in India to have the scriptures in a language familiar with them. It took Carey approximately six years to complete the translation of the New Testament into Bengali.
  • Moves to Serampore, helps organize missionary community; baptizes first Indian convert, Krishna Pal

    At this time, Carey’s mission bought a house that was large enough to accommodate all the families and facilitate a school. This became their means of support. In December, Krishna Pal, a Hindu, was the first to convert to Christianity and be baptized.
  • First of 19 mission stations established

    In 1804 a mission was established in Cutwa. This was the first mission among 19 that Carey and his team will establish in various parts of India.
  • Fire at Serampore destroys years of translation work

    The fire destroyed the printing press--$10,000 was lost as a result of it but it got raised and sent to Serampore within 50 days. This was the first case where generous donations were given in regards to missions; now, it is much more common.
  • Serampore College founded; Sanskrit Bible published

    Serampore College was founded to train indigenous ministers that focuses on educating about growth of the Church. Also sought to provide an unsegregated education specifically in arts and sciences. The Old testament was also published in Sanskrit.
  • Organizes Agricultural Society of Bengal

    Founded by William Carey--has a flower garden greenhouses, and a library. The goal was to promote agricultural improvements.
  • Carey dies at Serampore

    Carey died at the age of 73 and is buried at Serampore. Three years later Joshua Marshman dies; Serampore mission closed.
