The Beginning
The book starts with Adam standing in the parking lot of a strip mall, frozen in fear of the fact that he shot two prisoners of their neighborhood. All of the power and electricity in the world gone out mysteriously four months ago, and Adam’s neighborhood formed together to survive and protect themselves from other threats. Adam had just escaped his own house after Brett, a former member of their neighborhood, had tried to kill him. -
Brett's Compound
Adam and Herb were going to fly in their Cessna plane and were going to attack Brett’s compound. They were going to use bombs to destroy a certain area there. They flew there and Adam landed the plane on the runway, the guards hadn’t started shooting. Herb placed the bombs and Adam did a tight spin and flew away as fast as possible. The bomb blew up in a huge cloud of dust and fire. Adam and Herb wanted to make sure that they wouldn’t attack them again and make them afraid. -
Compound
Adam flew in the Cessna with Todd and his girlfriend, Lori. They were following their away team to go and finish off Brett’s small compound. They made sure that nobody else was there. It was deserted and was quickly destroyed. Back at the neighborhood, they made a mass funeral to five guards that were killed by Brett’s men. Adam instead went with Doctor Morgan, the doctor in their neighborhood was called on his walkie talkie that there was a baby being born, and Adam would go with him. -
Invaded
During the night, Adam started hearing gunshots while he was outside with Lori. There were three gunshots, then the general alert siren went off. Two guards were shot and Adam was running to warn everyone. Herb, Howie the leader of the guards, and his mother all made it to where the shots were being fired, but the attackers had already gone. The attacks were coming from condos, so the day after, the away team, Adam and Todd in the ultralight, searched them but no one was there. -
Extending
During a meeting, everyone was talking about who attacked them, and to find a solution for other attacks. Eventually, Adam came up with an idea to extend the walls of the neighborhood and use the people that come into the neighborhood to help guard, or do other useful things. They were also thinking about making allies with other neighborhoods to become a stronger force. Three weeks later, they finished extending the walls, and ended with 257 new people living in their neighborhood. -
Harvesting
Adam, Herb, Lori and Todd were all flying high around the neighborhood, seeing everything that has changed since they extended the neighborhood. As they were flying, Lori saw that the roof of her house was gone and it was kind of destroyed. But, the field beside her house was planted and was full of potatoes. The next day everyone harvested the potatoes. Eventually, they ran into the McCurdy family, an old friend of Lori's family. -
Allies
The neighbourhood were having a meeting about how strengthening the neighborhood even more and thinking about allying with other neighbourhoods to trade things they needed like food, fuel, and get even more allies. Adam and Lori were both in the Cessna, flying to other neighborhoods and dropping off invitations. -
Captured
While Adam and Lori were flying over the city, an old and very dangerous U.S military plane flew toward them and gestured for them to land. They had no other option and followed them down. When they got down, they weres stripped of their weapons and were brought inside to talk to their leader, Mr. Wayne. They talked about each others places and when they were done, the people there refueled their plane and were allowed to leave. -
Orphans
While Adam was at the neighbourhood, his mother were with two children who's parents were killed by Brett, right in front of their faces. They were dropped off at the gates of Adam's neighbourhood and were now there. Brett had also sent a letter to Adam, making a deal. He wrote that he wanted food dropped off at the highway to feed his people, and if they don't, he will keep killing parents and sending their children to their neighbourhood. -
The Big Meeting
Adam's neighbourhood had a meeting about this deal and what they should do about it. They were trying to weigh the alternatives and make a descision that's in their best intrests. It took them a while and they couldn't decide if they should give the food or not. Adam then came up with the idea of making them think that they were going to give the food, but end up attacking them. They added a gun to the Cessna to help as well. -
The End Part 2
Herb was trying to make a deal with Brett, saying that if he were to surrender, Herb and the neighbourhood would tend and feed their men, and Brett would stand trial. Herb came out and walked over to Brett. Brett smiled and whipped out a pistol from his back pocket and shot Herb in the chest. Adam already had his rifle trained onto Brett, and Adam shot him in the head, killing him. But, Herb was dead. -
The End Part 1
They started driving to the highway with many old cars and planes following behind. All of the vehicles behind him skidded to a stop. They all got out of their vehicles and took cover behind a makeshift wall. Brett's men came in, started shooting, and then Adam's neighbourhood started shooting as well. Adam's neighbourhood was overpowering them, and soon everyone stopped shooting. Herb came in with a bullhorn and started talking to them. Brett came out in the open and Herb told him to surrender. -
The End Part 3
After everyone got back to the neighbourhood, Adam got a note from Dr. Morgan. It was from Herb. It turns out that Herb was already suffering from cancer, so he would've died if Brett hadn't killed him. After Adam was done reading, he went outside and saw that the lights were on at the highway! People all around were shouting and laughing with joy, as the lighta flickered then went off.
