    The Compromise of 1850 was a set of bills passed in Congress which tried to settle the issue of enslavement, which was about to split the nation.Yet the Compromise of 1850 served its purpose. For a time it kept the Union from splitting, and it essentially delayed the outbreak of the Civil War for a decade.

  • Treaty of Kanagawa

    Treaty of Kanagawa is signed. The treaty opened Japan up for trade, after considerable pressure from the United States.
  • The Kansas-Nebraska Act

    The Kansas-Nebraska Act was devised as a compromise over enslavement in 1854, as the nation was beginning to be torn apart in the decade before the Civil War. Power brokers on Capitol Hill hoped it would reduce tensions and perhaps provide a lasting political solution to the contentious issue. Opposition to it changed the political landscape across the nation it also had a profound effect on Abraham Lincoln, whose political career was revitalized by his opposition to the Kansas-Nebraska Act.

    Stephen Douglas and Abraham Lincoln held a series of seven debates in Illinois while running for a U.S. Senate seat. Douglas won the election, but the debates elevated Lincoln, and his anti-slavery views, to national prominence. Newspaper stenographers wrote down the content of the debates, and portions that were published in newspapers introduced Lincoln to an audience outside of Illinois.

    jermiah is someone that helped emma joe and charles and his family escape but later he is questioned by Mistress Henfield and Pendle he lies but it was a bad lie so they dpread news that jeriah helped so he was forced to move away from the south away from his boat business

    Abraham Lincoln is Nominated President , Lincoln's election for President was followed by South Carolina's succession from the Union. Its senators had resigned from Congress and several of the Southern states were looking to leaving it as well.

    The Emancipation Proclamation was a document signed into law by President Abraham Lincoln on 1863, freeing the enslaved and held in the states in rebellion against the US. The signing of the Emancipation Proclamation did not free a great many of enslaved in a sense, as it couldn't be enforced in areas not in the control of Union troops. However, it signaled an important clarification of the government's policy toward enslavement, which had been evolving since the outbreak of the Civil War.
