    After the French and Indian War, the British enacted the Proclamation of 1763. It stated that American colonists could not go beyond the Appalachian Mountains, even though they won land from the War. Americans were eager to move west and started to defy British rule.

    The land ordinance of 1785 provided income for the government by selling plots of land for no more than $1. This encouraged westward migration for American people. then, the Northwest Ordinance of 1787 devised a plan for establishing settlements as more people arrived.

    Robert Livingston and James Monroe agreed to buy all of the Louisiana territory for $15 million. This purchase almost doubled the size of the old U.S. Because of this, many federalists feared that an expanded U.S. would dilute their New England based political power.

    In 1893, Samuel Dole and a group of American planters organized a coup and dethroned the queen, Liliuokalani. When asked to annex Hawaii, Grover Cleveland opposed the annexation. But, when William McKinley took office, he granted their request and Hawaii became part of the union.
