Mountain men lived in a lot of poverty, they were constantly on the break of dying from dehydration,starvation, cold, heat, wild animals. Mountain men wore animal fur specifically fur hats they were very in fashion at the time. Mountain men were pioneers and they found paths within the mountains.

In 1848 James Marshall found gold. After the find of gold, it got big and everyone went into westward migration. Everyone that sought out their fortune where called forty-niners because of the year they arrived 1849.

Missionaries went west to convert American Indians to Christianity. They crossed mountains with wagons and proved that women could make the journey.
