Original 13 Colonies
The United States gained the Original 13 Colonies by winning the Revolutionary war. This war lasted from 1775 to 1783 and weakend the United States economy. The Declaration of Independence was a big part of the 13 Colonies. The Declaration of Independence was a statement of the second continental congress that defined the colonists rights, outlined their complaints twards Great Britain, and declared the colonies independence. -
Northwest Territory
The United States obtained this land bye overpowering everyone else who wanted this land. 5 states were created from this territory which were Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, and Wisconsin. For a territory to become a state they had to have 4 requirements. The 4 requirements were the territory had to have a Constitution, had to have a Bill of Rights, public edication had to be provided, and neither slavery nor involuntary service were aloud. -
Louisiana Purchase
The United States obtained this land by purchasing it from the french.(Napoleon Bonaparte) President Jefferson Purchased this land for $15 million.The Mississippi River and New Orleans were important to the U.S. because the Mississippi River was one of the trade routes in the U.S. and New Orleans was important because Manufactured goods passed through. They were also both important because they were one of the strongest thinks in our economy. All of this land double the size of the U.S. -

The united states got east Florida and also agreed to take responsability for up to $5 million of the United States citizens claim against Spain. -

The southerners were upset with the indians because the Seminole Indians entered the United States land and raided their property and they also aided runaway slaves. President Monroe sent General Andrew Jackson to florida's border but when arriving Jackson sent his troops to invade florida and this act was unconstitutional because President Monroe didnt send direct orders to invade florida. Texas Annexation (1)
The word annex means to take control of land and incorperate into a country, state, etc. Americans moved to Texas because the government of Texas promised that the americans didnt have to follow the United States laws and they could bring as many slaves as they wanted and that there was freedom of religion. Texas became a republic because they dominated in the national election. Eventuallly the Mexican government started taking away how many slaves were brought. -
Texas Annexation (2)
The Mexican government also said that you had to practice the Roman Catholic. The United States didnt allow Texas to enter the union as a state because the slave states would over power the free states and would be unbalanced. -
Manifest Destiny
Manifest Destiny is a beleif shared by many Amaricans in the mid-1800's that the United States was meant to expand across the continent to the Pacific Ocean. The roots of Manifest Destiny lay in America's economics, political, and social experiences. They also wanted to spread Christianity meaning they beleived that god wanted them to expand west word. -
Oregon Territory
Originally Great Britain shared control of the Oregon Territory with the United States. The U.S. was trying to avoid war with Great Britain so this resulted in a signing of a treaty. Washington, Oregon, Idaho, parts of Montana and Wyoming and california were formed from the Oregon Territory. -
Mexican Cession
The main issue that started the Mexican-American War was the U.S. took Texas from Mexico and made it a state and Mexico Texas should be theirs. The treaty signed to end the war was the Treaty of Guadalupe. The U.S. states created from the Mexican cession were Navada, Utah, most of Arazona and New Mexico, parts of Colorado, and Wyoming. This all increased the size of the U.S. by 25%. -
Gadsden Purchase
The U.S. agreed to purchasing the land because they wanted to fix the boundries/border so they purchase land from which is now New Mexico and Arizona. They were trying to avoid another war. The U.S. paid $10 million for this land. Now that we have this land the boundries of the United States are finally fixed and there is a boreder between the United States and Mexico.
