Westward Expansion/Manifest Destiny Timeline

  • Original 13 Colonies

    The French and Indian War was hown the U.S gained control of the 13 colonies. The Declaration of Independence outlined the colonists' rights and declared the colonies' independence. The American Revolution lasted about eight years and this weakend the newly formed U.S economy.
  • Northwest Territory

    The U.S obtained this territory because the congress passed the Northwest Ordinance of 1787. This territory included the area that is now Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, and Wisconsin.
  • Manifest Destiny

    Manifest Destiny is the belief shared by Americans that the U.S was meant to expand across the continent to the Pacific Ocean. Americans belived God gave them the right to expand westward so they could set up a new society and take control of new lands.
  • Lousiana Purchase

    We obtained this land to discuss the offer with the French minister and Napolean sold Louisiana from France. Mississpi and New Orleans was important to the U.S becuase they were good trading ports. Thomas Jefferson is credited with purchasing this kand and the U.S agreed to buy Louisiana for $15 million. The size of the U,S doubled and the Louisiana Territory was a huge region of land.
  • Adams-Onis Treaty

    The Adams-Onis Treaty of 1819 is what the U.S and Spain agreed upon.Spain gave East Flordia to the U.S and gave up its claims to West Flordia. The United States gave up its claims to what is now Texas.
  • Texas Annexation

    Americans moved to Texas because the promise of cheap or free land attracted most families. The Mexican Government made a law that banned free African Americans from immigrating to Texas, Texas economy was based on farming and ranching withb very little industry. Taxes on imports and property failed to bring in much revenue. The governments lack of funds made it difficult to defend its own territory.
  • Oregon Territory

    Great Britain, Russia, and Spain originally shared control of the Oregon Territory with the U.S. The United States and Britain had signed a treaty in 1818 that allowed both countries to occupy Oregon country. Neither country was willing to start a war over this territory. Washington, Idaho, and Oregon were created out of the Oregon Territory.
  • Mexican Cession

    The main issue that the U.S and Mexico argued over was the annexation of Texas. The treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo marked new peace and ended the Mexican-American War. Mexican Cession included the present day states of California, Nevada, and Utah. It also included most of Arizona and New Mexico and parts of COlorado and Whyoming. It increased the size of the United States by 25%.
  • Gadsen Purchase

    The U.S agreed to purchase land under the Gadsen Purchase because Polk pointed out the benefits the U.S would gain from the treaty. The U.S government paid Mexico $10 million for the Southern parts of what are now Arizona and New Mexico. With the Gadsen Purchase, the continental boundaries of the United States were finally fixed.
