    This was the first Fugitive slave act. It said that all escaped slaves had to return to their owners, or white people could capture colored people and bring them before a judge to decide if they were free or not.
  • Louisiana Purchase

    Louisiana Purchase
    Thomas Jefferson wanted the port of New Orleans, so he sent James Monroe to France to negotiate the sake if the pot of New Orleans which was in the Louisiana territory. Napoleon (the leader of France did not need the Louisiana territory enjoyment and needed money more to wage war with Britain. The entire territory was purchased then for 15 million dollar.

    The Oregon Trail started in Independence, Missouri, and ended in Utah, and was was 2 thousand miles long. It was used to help people move west and gave them the choice to follow a trail.

    The Seminoles hid runaway slaves from Georgia, and also stole from farmers. Andrew Jackson went to patrol the border, but invaded instead. President Monroe was then advised to send a message to Spain, “Govern or get out!” so Spain gave up Florida.

    Missouri was added to the US along with 11 other states were slave states, and 11 other states were free states. Missouri’s border separated the free states in the north, to the slaves states in the south.
  • Trail of Tears

    Trail of Tears
    Andrew Jackson ignored the orders of a treaty with the Cherokee. U.S. troops rounded up about 15,000 Cherokee and put them in prison camps. Local residents burned the native’s homes. Troops then sent the Cherokee west in groups of about 1,000 on a path known now as the Trail of Tears.

    Americans were brought into Mexico against their will. They didn’t want to be apart of Mexico, so the Texas revolution happened. In the end, Texas won its independence and was its own country for 10 years. The US then decided to annex Texas in 1845 under president Polk.
  • Gold Rush

    James Wilson Marshall discovered the gold, but made a deal with his employer, John Augustus to mine out the gold. After people learned of the gold, thousands “rushed” (see what I did there) to the property of John Augustus, and began to mine their own gold. The city of San Francisco was made because of the gold rush.

    Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo
    This treaty was signed to the end Mexican -American war. As a result the border between Texas and Mexico was established as the Rio Grande river. The Us also acquired the Mexican cession which included the modern states of California, New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada, and Utah.

    Compromise of 1850
    Senator Henry Clay created the compromise. The compromise said that California should be a free state; DC should not have slavery, but have a slave trade; and New Mexico and Utah have slavery.

    The second fugitive slave act put penalties on people who helped slaves escape and created “special commissioners” the right to take slaves back to their owners. The slaves now had no voice in their own trials.
  • Kansas-Nebraska Act

    Kansas-Nebraska Act
    The territories that were added are Kansas and Nebraska. This would let people decide if they wanted slaves or not in their state/territory (Kansas or Nebraska). The Missouri Compromise was repealed because of this.

    The Homestead act promoted moving Westward in America and encouraged African Americans to own their own land, and gave 160 acres (65 hectares) per person. The rules were you had to either have a family or be 21. This meant freed slaves, immigrants, single/widowed woman, and etc. could have more land.
  • Transcontinental Railroad

    Transcontinental Railroad
    Union Pacific, and Central Pacific were the two companies who built the railroad. Union Pacific started in Omaha, while Central Pacific started in Sacramento. This event was important because people had to travel in horse and buggy before this was built and it took a long time. After it was made, people could travel much faster.
