Westward Expansion

  • Louisiana Purchase

With America doubling its size in land mass following the Louisiana Purchase, people were bound to expand to the new land or else there would be no other reason behind purchasing the land. This leads me to think American expansion Westward was inevitable.
  • Indian Removal Act

The Indian Removal Act caused tons of people to migrate out west to lead native Americans to their new locations. This also meant people may stay out there leading this to effect America’s inevitable expansion.
  • Manifest Destiny

Because America was a historically religious nation, when it was thought that God wanted them to relocate out west, just like the idea of Manifest Destiny said, it was inevitable that people would listen to his word and do just that.
  • Mexican-American War

America is a very prideful country and when in times of war, people will relocate to help their country succeed. So the war the America entered with Mexico over the annexation of Texas inevitably led to people relocating out west.
  • Oregon Territory

Following the ideas of American pride, when America forced Britain to give them the land acquired in the treaty they signed, they wanted to move out there. It also was the most northern territory that America owned in the west, people wanted to explore the new opportunity.
  • Compromise of 1850

The compromise of 1850 said (1) California was admitted to the Union as a free state; (2) the remainder of the Mexican cession was divided into the two territories of New Mexico and Utah [no mention of slavery]; (3) the claim of Texas to a portion of New Mexico was satisfied by a payment of $10 million and more. This meant tons of new land for America without having to fight over slavery. So many new people moved out west for new opportunity.
  • Bleeding Kansas

Because Kansas was undecided as whether to be a slave state, or non-slave state, people rushed toKansas to cast their vote and to fight for what they believed in. This caused many Americans to expand westward inevitably.
