    Lifestyle Changes
    People in the West changed because new economic changes occured. Times changed because railroads were built giving people the ability to fast travel to the West. People had to create houses out of the land . These were called dugouts and soddies. People mined gold. People mined gold and cattle herded to get money. These were knew methods to make money in the West The way people had traveled was different, and people's work changed. The West had changed much of things.

    Homestead Act
    This act was passed to give land to people in the West. They would apply for the land, get a deed for the land, and get the land improved. Anyone who had not become violent towards the U.S. could apply for this land.
  • Farmer Reform.

    Farmer Reform.
    Farmers are forced to pay taxes on railroads, suffer droughts of their crop, and had little money. Farmers wanted to reform the way things were. They start by creating the patrons of husbandry that would help farmers. The system had to be changed. This would lead to more groups being formed,

    Droughts on the frontier lead to other hardships in the West. Fires, blizzards, locust raids, and ocasional raids. The West wasn't as good as people made it out to be. They came to mine gold, prosper on the land, and live a good life. But much people suffered still in this time period.

    The Native Americans ambush General Custor and kill him and the rest of his men. The would be a big blow to the U.S. His leadership was key in the fight against the Native Americans.

    Helen Hunt Jackson publishes a non fiction book exposing the U.S.'s broken promises to the Native Americans. It shows how badly mistreated the Native Americans were in that time period. The book was called "A Century of Dishonor"

    The Native Americans lost a majority of their main resource the buffalo. White settlers hunted it and it was in low supply. The Native Americans used every part of the Buffalo one way or another in their lifestyle.

    The Battle of Wounded Knee
    General Custor rounds up 350 Native Americans and demands their weapons. A shot is then fired causing much more guns to go off. Over 300 Native Americans are massacred. Soldiers reacted and just kept shooting.

    Populist Party Convention
    The populist party holds a convention displaying what they want for the country. They want debts to be lifted from farmers, and the people to have a greater voice in the government. They were a party for the people and their needs. The party wouldn't last though, as the party would collapse because of the election of 1896. The party would crumble since those against the party voted for Mckinley, a Democrat. The Populist party were in favor of the Republican candadite. This killed the party

    Panic of 1893
    This was when Banks went bankrupt, stocks went down, and the gold supply went thin. It all started when the Philidelphia and Reading Railroad went bankrupt. This was an effect of the farmers debts. By December 1894, 1/5th of the work force had lost their jobs. This created a big problem with the country as a hole. Now it was even harder to get the farmers their reform. The country had lost much on that day.
