African Americans first came to the country in 1619. They were initially treated as servants but with no slave laws. So they had the same opportunities for freedom dues as whites. In 1641 slave laws were first passed in Virginia and you could then buy and sell people. -

Lower class challenged the upperclass. Upperclass won with more resources. -
Enrollment Act of 1863
People coud pay 300$ to not have to go to war. Part of the Act and many people used it. -
