War in Syria

  • Start of Revolution

    Protests began in the cities of Syria calling for the fall of the government, with a violent response from the government.
  • Further Spread of Revolution

    more than 120 killed at "Bloody Friday" Protest in Daraa and neighboring cities. Refugees begin to cross into Turkey this month.
  • Free Syrian Army

    Hundreds are killed in Hama. Military defectors create the Free Syrian Army which Riad Al Asaad headed.
  • Jabhat al-Nusra in Syria

    The terrorist group Jabhat al-nusra, basically an offset of al-Qaida, form in Syria due to the instablility and power vacuum in the region.
  • US closes embassy

    UNSC drafts resolution calling for Assad to step down, but is veto'd by Syria's strong allies, China and Russia. The bombing of Homs and other cities becomes very intense, and the US closes its embassy. At this point more than 7,500 have died.
  • Red Line

    This month is when Obama threatens military response if it is found that Syria used Chemical weapons on its people.
  • ISIS comes to Syria

    People falsly claiming they are fighting in the name of religion, jihadis, grow in number with Islamic State formally entering the region. US pledges $123 million in non-lethal aid to rebels.
  • "Worst Humanitarian Disaster"

    During the month of June, the stown of al-Qusair is taken back by the Syrian government and Hezbollah. US claims the Syrian regime has used chemical weapons during the past year and the UN calls it the "worst humanitarian disaster". Death toll is now in excess of 100,000 since the start of the war.
  • Announcing a Caliphate

    During this month, elections were held but community does not believe it will be truthful. IS's leader, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, announces a self declared caliphate in the East of Syria and West of Iraq. The Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons completes removal of chemical weapons in Syria.
  • IS grows

    During this month IS becomes a more serious threat, taking a large military base near Raqaa and begining to take oil fields and complete mass murders.
  • Humanitarian Aid Granted

    At the end of 2014, the Syrian government allows the World Health Organization to provide humanitarian aid in previously off limit areas. This year, 76,000 people died making it the worst year yet.
  • Current Situation

    Currently, IS continues to advance while the government secures key locations. The war in Syria is extremely complex and messy, and no longer serves the purpose its citizans once thought it did. It has now become a battleground for extremists from around the world to take advantage of the situation and try to take as much control as they can. Over 250,000 people have died and the situation is not getting any better. One will have to stay tuned for the next 5-10 years to see the end result.
