    January 27, 1991 rebels overran Somali capital and forced the dictator Muhammad Siad Barre to flee his own country. This was the start of a civil war in Somali. Thousands of local population also fled to survive.     Starvations, Civil Wars, and disease that killed over 350,000 Somalis caused the United States of America under President George H. W. Bush to intervene. President Bush ordered to send food and supplies to Somalia.     Operation Restore Hope
    Operation Restore Hope took full affect. The battle between Somali rebels and the U.S. ignited and the U.S. had killed hundreds of the Somali rebels.     Operation Restore Hope Ended

    The mission Operation Restore Hope finally ended March 1994. Starvation has ended and the restoration had begun. The U.S. lost 43 Soldiers and 153 wounded during the war. This mission cost U.S. $1.7 billion dollars. After the United Peacekeeper evacuated Somalia Mohamed Farak Aidid declared himself to be the president.

    New President and Outbreak
    Hussein was killed during an ambush north of Mogadishu. 110 people died from an outbreak of Cholera within 2 days. Abdulkassim Salat Hassan was named to be the new president of Somalia. Gelayadh announced his government. A cholera outbreak due to unsanitary water kills hundreds of Somalis.

    Restoring Central Government

    Took 14 attempts to restore the central government. Abdullahi Yusuf was elected as the new president. A big Tsunami off the Indonesia destroyed the coast of Somali. Government begins returning home from exile. November 2005 Prime Minister Ali Mohammed Ghedi survived an assignation attack.

    Meeting in Baidoa

    President Abdullahi and U.S. Air Strikes
    President Abdullahi enters Mogadishu.

  • United Nation Security

    The UN Security Council approves the sending of other countries' warships to Somalia’s territorial waters in order to combat the threat of Somali pirates, who have begun hijacking ships regularly. 
    The head of the UN Development Program in Somalia is killed by gunmen in Mogadishu.
    Fighting continues, including coordinated suicide bomb attempts in the semiautonomous peaceful regions of the country.
    3.5 million Somalis suffer from war and famine.
