Joey is bought as a foal by Mr. Narrcott, Alberts father, at the auction and is going to be trained to become a farm horse. Albert is the one who trains him to plow the fields at their farm. -
Joey gets sold to Captain Nicholls
Since the Narrcot family is running low on money they have to sell Joey, to be able to pay down their mortgage. They eventually sell Joey to Captain Nicholls, who works in the army, because they were so desperate for money and the war was about to begin. Joey is being trained to be a cavalry horse by Captain Nicholls, his new rider, and during his training Joey meets the loyal friend Topthorn (another horse) at the army base. -

Captain Nicholls is killed at War
Captain Nicholls, Joye´s rider and friend gets killed at war in the first battle. -
Joey meets Trooper Warren, his new rider
A while after Captain dies Joey gets a new solider assigned to him named Trooper Warren. Trooper lost his previous horse in the same fight at Captain Nicholls died. Trooper is not a very good rider, but Joey likes him because he treats well. -
Christmas Truce
A weapon truce is set on Christmas Eve as a result of a young solider from the British side climbing up from the trench without a gun and his hands in the air. -
Joey and Thopthorn are captured by the Germans
They get captured after a failed charge from the British side and are put to pull the ambulance cart back and forth the battlefield. They have to get wounded soldiers on places where the ambulance car can not reach, trough muddy and peddled ground. -
Emily and her grandfather find Joey and Topthorn
When the horses meet Emily, a young girl, she immediately love them and took them in. Everyday they would come back to Emily and her grandfather to get fed and loved, after they had pulled the ambulance cart all day. -
Joey and Topthorn are surrendered by the army
Joey and Topthorn are surendered by the army to Emily and her grandfather who now uses them as farm horses to harvest they're crops. They are left completely in the care of Emily and her grandfather. -
Joey and Topthorn are taken away by a different army
A few months after Joey and Topthorn are surrendered to Emily and her grandfather they are taken away from them. This time by a much harsher army called the German artillery, who puts them in a small team of 6 to become Gunners. -
Joey and Topthorn pulls the ammunition cart
Joey and Topthorn are chosen to pull the ammunition cart back and forth from the front lines. -
Topthorn dies and Joey is won by the British
Shortly after Joey and Topthorn return to war, Topthorn dies of weakness from the previous winter and not getting fed properly. Frightened, Joey runs through battlefields and cuts himself on sharp wire, but keeps going. He eventually finds himself in the middle of 'no-man's-land,' the area between the front lines. Soldiers from both sides of the war come out and flip a coin to decide who wins Joey. The British win and bring him to the veterinary hospital to get him cleaned up and heal. -
Joey is reunited with Albert
At the hospital Joey is finally reunited with Albert, the boy that bought him and trained him as a foul. But because of the cuts Joey got when he ran through all the sharp wire, he end up getting very ill. He is saved by the help of Albert and the other men at the hospital. After Joey has healed he starts pulling a cart between the hospital. -
Joey is actioned off by the army
After the war the British could not take all the horses back to Britain from France. Therefore some of the horses are actioned off, including Joey. Luckily, Joey is bought by Emilys grandfather who gives it to Albert. -
Together, Joey and Albert return to the farm
Albert and Joey return to their farm and he becomes a farm horse again. Just like he was at the beginning.
