A young colt is sold and brought to a farm. There, he meets his new owner's son, Albert, who names him Joey.
-
Albert trains Joey to plow the fields and work on the farm because Joey´s owner made a bet he could be trained in 1 week
-
Joey is sold to Captain Nicholls and is trained as a war horse. In training, he meets a horse named Topthorn who proves to be a loyal friend.
-
After Captain Nicholls is killed in battle, Trooper Warren becomes Joey's rider.
-
When the war moves away from them, Joey and Topthorn are left completely in the care of Emilie and her grandfather, who took care of them when they worked pulling the ambulance cart.
-
Weeks later, a German artillery troop takes Joey and Topthorn to haul their guns.
-
Shortly after Joey and Topthorn return to war, Topthorn dies of weakness from the previous winter and of exposure. Frightened, Joey runs through battlefields and cuts himself on barbed wire, but keeps going. He eventually finds himself right in the middle of 'no-man's-land,' the area between the front lines. Representatives from both sides of the war come out and flip a coin to determine who wins Joey. The British won and brought him to the veterinary hospital to get cleaned up and heal.
-
At the hospital, Joey is finally reunited with Albert. However, Joey gets fatally ill with tetanus from his wire cut. He is saved by the care of Albert and the other men.
-
Since the army cannot take all the horses home from France, Joey is sold to Emilie's grandfather, who gives him to Albert. Joey and Albert return to the farm.
