The war came and Vladek goes to the war front. He kills a German dressed as a tree. He is made a war prisoner and is taken to prisoners of war camps. Then he is moved to a labor camp.

On Parsha Truma Vladek was realeased from the prisoner of war camp. Parsha Truma is a section from the Torah which is read during one week every year.

The Germans put up signs saying all Jews must relocate. Nahum Cohn and two others were hanged in the middle of the town center. Nahum Cohn was one of Anja's father's friends.

A new order forces Vladek and his family into a ghetto in Srodula. Around this time is also the last time Vladek sees Richieu.

Vladek and Anja end up in Auschwitz after smugglers call the gestapo on them. Vladek had trusted these smugglers in hopes that they would take him and Anja to Hungary.

A Kapo searches for a prisoner to teach him English. The Kapo chooses Vladek to teach him and in return the Kapo helps Vladek to survive.

From March to May Vladek is in quarantine. Quarantine is a state of enforced isolation.

Vladek begins working as a tinman in Auschwitz. This job aides him in his quest for survival.

BirkenauVladek goes to Birkenau for work and also to see Anja. Vladek heard that Anja had been sent here from a nice woman named Mancie.

From August to October, Vladek works in a shoe shop where he fixes the boots of the German soldiers.

Vladek takes a horrific train ride to Dachau. Once he arrives he encounters lice, typhus, and more starvation. This is where he experiences his greatest misery.

Vladek and other prisoners were exchanged as war prisoners to the Swiss. They were sent on trains and brought to the frontier.

1945: Churchill announcing the end of World War II in EuropeGermany officially surrenders. The allies won! The Nazi's prisoners were freed.

Vladek and 10 refugees take a plane from Poland to Sweden.

Anja and Vladek have Art. Art is their second son.

Anja commits suicide. Throughout Anja's life she had dealt with depression and it finally became too much.
