    The first Underground Railway opens in London
    As the population of England increased and more people began moving into the suburbs of London, there was a need for better public transportation. The Metropolitan Railway came up the idea of making the first underground railway. It first opened in 1863 and it was only a 3.7 mile track but it carried 38,000 passengers on its opening day.
