  • U.S. Receives title to Utah Land

    The United States received title to much of the Southwest, including Utah, at the end of the Mexican War in 1848.
  • State of Deseret

    State of Deseret
    The church of Jesus Christ of the Latter Day Saints establishes a theocracy in the Utah territory by forming a political government and creating the State of Deseret. All positions in the state are given to members of the LDS church. They begin writing a constitution and desire to join as a state.
  • 1849 Petition for statehood

    1849 petition was the first of seven attempts to gain statehood. The Mormon leaders hosted a constitutional convention to write a constitution for the new state they wanted. They wanted to name the state Deseret, and it would have been huge. It would have included Utah, most of Nevada and Arizona, and parts of southern California, Wyoming, Colorado, New Mexico, Oregon, and Idaho.

    About half of those living in Utah Territory in 1857 experienced life in a polygamous family as a husband, wife, or child at some time during their lives. However, as time passed, the percentage of polygamous families decreased with increased pressure from the government and other citizens.
  • Foreign Born Immigration

    Between 1856 and 1860 3,000 Foreign Born LDS came to Utah in ten handcart companies. These immigrants ranged in varying experience and abilities. There were many farmers, bricklayers, carpenters, tinman, and servants who helped establish the state.

    Liberal Party and William S. Godbe a successful businessman and Latter-day Saint founded a journal called Utah Magazine in 1868.

    The Liberal Party, campaigning voraciously in mining towns, won a disputed election.
  • Percent of Utah that Was Foreign Born

    In 1870, one of every three Utah residents was foreign-born, a higher percentage than found in any states or territories of the Union.

    1890 LDS President Woodruff’s Manifesto lifted the command to practice plural marriage, thus causing LDS to reconsider their future marital plans. It also eases the government pressure and enables more discussion politically.

    With lobbying by friends both inside and outside Utah Territory, the Senate passed the Utah enabling bill. on July 10, 1894, and President Cleveland signed it a few days later.
