    Fort Buenaventura WebsiteFort Buenaventura is built near present day Ogden. It was the first permanent Anglo settlement in the area. It was built by Miles Goodyear and his wife. It helped transition the area from the nomadic ways of the Indians and the Mountain Men, to permanent settlement.

    Utah State SongBrigham Young arrived with the first wagon train party of Mormon Pioneers. He said the famous words "This is the place!" when he saw the valley.

    When the US won the Mexican War, they signed a peace treaty that was called the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. It offically ceded the land of Utah to the United States of America.

    The constitutional convention proposes the State of Deseret. It encompassed the entire great basin area, this is a lot bigger than Utah is today.

    The US Senate denied the request for the State of Deseret. They rejected the name proposed by the Mormon settlers and they shrunk the borders, and instead organized "Utah Territory."

    The Walker War was between the Ute Indians and the Mormon Settlers.

    The Utah War
    The Utah War didn't actually have any battles, but the US government sent troops to Utah to remove Governor Brigham Young and replace him with a governor that they appointed for Utah Territory. They had chosen Alfred Cumming. The Mormon settlers did not want the army to come into Salt Lake City and tried very hard to keep them out, that is why this is called a war.
  • Utah Black Hawk War

    This was the last conflict the Mormon Settlers had with the Indians in Utah Territory. After this war was over, the Indians were moved to the Uintah and Ouray reservations in the Uintah Basin. The war lasted until 1868.

    Iron Wheels A-rolling The Union and Central Pacific Railroads finally united the nation with the completion of the Transcontinental Railroad. They met at Promontory Point in Utah Territory. This place is now considered a National Historic Site. They finalized the railroad with a "golden spike."

    Utah's first hospital was built by the Sisters of the Holy Cross. It was named Holy Cross Hospital and was run by the Catholic Church. It is still operating today but is now called the Salt Lake Regional Medical Center.
