    During the 1950's there was a movement called Socail conformity .This was a time when men were expected to go to work everyday and earn a living to support the family and a woman's place was at home, cooking, cleaning and taking care of the children. Girls were raised to be "ladies" and boys to be gentlemen.There were also people that went against this conformity, these people were part of the "Beat Movement".

    In the 1960's all of the people that did not agree with conformity, materialism, and social and political norms came together, these people were known as the Counterculture . You could say they were free spirits. They believed in and practiced peace, love, harmony, music, mysticism, and religions outside the Judeo-Christian tradition.     In 1966 the Black Panther Party was started in California. It was a group that had desires of equality for Blacks and other oppressed peoples, just like many others all over the country, but were labeled as a "threat to the internal security of the country" by the FBI.
