US History A Week Two - Timeline

  • Missouri Compromise

    • The Missouri Compromise allowed Missouri to join the nation as a slave state, however Maine would also join, but as a free state.
    • This was important because it also banned states north of the Louisiana Purchase (aside from Missouri) from being slave states.
  • Monroe Doctrine

    • The Monroe Doctrine addressed Britain, telling them that they would not allow puppet leaders or any more colonization.
    • It was important because it stated the United States opposition to colonies.

    Battle of the Alamo

    • The Battle of the Alamo was a battle fought after the Alamo mission was taken over by people fighting for Texas independence.
    • It was important because even though the Texan's lost the battle, it inspired another battle to happen, which later got them independence.

    Panic of 1837

    • The Panic of 1837 was a financial crisis where prices went down and unemployment rates rose.
    • This was important because President Martin Van Buren later created a treasury separate from banks, which he didn't trust.

    Trail of Tears

    • The Trail of Tears was the journey made by the Cherokee Indians because of President Jackson's Indian removal policy.
    • This was important because it showed the cruelty and heartlessness Jackson possessed, not caring about how terrible the journey was for them.
  • Sutter's Fort

    • Sutter's Fort was a small agriculture and trade colony.
    • It was important because it provided a place for travelers to stop and replenish supplies
  • Pre-Emption Act

    • The Pre-Emption Act allowed pioneers to preempt, or acquire in advance, land before settling.
    • This was important because pioneers would often settle on public lands before they could be sold, making it difficult to sell them after.

    U.S. Mexican War

    • The U.S. Mexican War was a war over where the border of Texas was: the Nueces River or the Rio Grande.
    • This was important because it was the first war America fought that wasn't in America itself. It also granted America much more territory.
  • Bear Flag Revolt

    • The Bear Flag Revolt was when American Settlers in California fought against the Mexican Government for independence.
    • This was important because the new territory allowed the U.S. to take over California and have it join the union.
  • Compromise of 1850

    • The Compromise of 1850 was an attempt to stop fighting between the North and South.
    • This was important because it ended slave trade in Washington D.C. and stopped the Fugitive Slave Act.
  • Fugitive Slave Law

    • The Fugitive Slave Law allowed for escaped slave's to be captured and returned back to their owners.
    • It was important because after it was passed, it caused many indifferent Northerners to become aware of how terrible slavery was.

    Gadsden Purchase

    • The Gadsden Purchase was the United States purchase of land from Mexico that later became Arizona and New Mexico.
    • This was important because it allowed America to grow and added two new states to the union.

    Bleeding Kansas

    • Bleeding Kansas was a series of violent disagreements between anti- and proslavery people.
    • It was important because it fueled even further disagreements between the North and South.
  • Dred Scott Decision

    • The Dred Scott Decision stated that slaves residing in free territory were still considered slaves, despite the Missouri Compromise.
    • This was important because it pushed the country even closer to civil war.

    • The Harpers Ferry Raid was John Brown hid out in a farm near Harpers Ferry and raided it at night before he was surrounded.
    • It was important because it created even more barriers between the North and the South because they couldn't agree on how to take the case.

    • The Civil War was a battle between the North and South because the South wanted to secede from the union to keep slavery, however the North wouldn't allow them to.
    • This was very important because it shaped the country to how it is today, where we know that slavery is wrong and we must keep together in order to survive as a country.

    Emancipation Proclamation

    • The Emancipation Proclamation freed slaves within rebel states.
    • It was important because it changed the focus on war, making people think more about the slave issue then seceding from the union.

    Battle of Gettysburg

    • The Battle of Gettysburg was one of the battles between the North and South during the Civil War. It ended with a huge defeat for the Confederacy, pushing the North ahead.
    • This is important because it ended the South's hopes for secession, helping to put a stop to the Civil War.
  • Gettysburg Address

    • The Gettysburg Address was a speech Abraham Lincoln gave to the country about the war. He spoke about how it was ridiculous of them to be fighting each other and that their country was founded for freedom and independence.
    • This was important because it helped bring a stop to the war and helped to end slavery.
  • 13th Amendment

    • The 13th Amendment states that "Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction."
    • This is important because it ended the discussion of slavery, outlawing it from the country
  • 14th Amendment

    • The 14th Amendment states that "All persons born or naturalized in the United States and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside."
    • This is important because it overrules any opinions about former slave's children, whether they are citizens or not.
  • 15th Amendment

    • The 15th Amendment states that "The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of race, color, or previous condition of servitude."
    • This is important because previously it had just been white men that could vote, however this made it possible for men of different colours to vote.
