End of US Civil War
The US Civil War ended with the surrender of the Army of Northern Virginia. Various hostilities occurred until August 20, 1866. This event was important for having the last major army of the Confederacy surrender. Without a large army, the Confederacy would be forced to accept the Union terms. Platt Amendment
Platt Amendment pertains to Cuba. Forbids Cuba from entering into a treaty with any country that would inhibit CUban independence or allow a foreign military base on the island. Also allows for US intervention for Cuba's well being. Ended in 1934. Image courtesy of wikimedia commons. -
United States Dominican Republic Debt
US assumes control of Dominican Republic debt and collection of duties to repay their debt. the Dominican Rep. "asked" the US for the agreement after some behind the scenes pressure. This event accentuates a much larger issue of the US becoming involved with the internal affairs of Latin American countries. World War I Starts
Known as the "Great War" and "The War to End All Wars" World War I breaks out in Europe. The major European powers, many aligned through secret treaties, chose sides and fought a war which would change the face of Europe. This event not only changed the face of Europe, but affected world events through today. My maternal grandfather was General Pershing's personal barber which also adds to my interest in this topic. Captain America Issue #1
The first issue of Captain America is released by Timely Comics, the forerunner to Marvel Comics. This "Super Soldier" was used for propaganda and was the most popular wartime comic. He is still used to this day in various forms with various messages. I chose this, because Captain America is my favorite superhero. Zoot Suit Riots end in LA
For about a week US Sailors & Servicemen took to the streets of LA attacking Mexican-Americans, many who wore Zoot Suits w/longer hair & showy accessories. Many ZS were beaten & stripped of their clothes, police did not intervene to help.
