After a whole lot fighting with the indegenous people, the Spanish and Portugese were very tense with who would take the land. The Spanish eventually were the first to make a permanent settlement in Uruguay, at Soriano.

The Thirth Three Orientals, who were led by Juan Antonio Lavalleja, declared independance, in response to the British Empire declared Portugal independant. This immedialty caused a 500 days long war, Cisplante War.

The two main parties of Uruguay argued quite frankly; the conservative Blancos, who were led by Manuel Oribe; and the liberal Colorados, who were led by Fructuoso Rivera. On 15 June 1838, Rivera overthrew Oribe, which dragged Rosa ( The ruler over Argentina, and a close friend to Oribe ) into the war when Rivera also declared war against Rosa, resulting in Guerra Grande, the Great War. This war lasted 13 years.

After a turn of events, with British interventions and an uprising, Oribe is killed and Colorado comes out first, leading to more revolts from the Blancos side, attempting to regain control; all failed.

Following the Guerra Grande, Uruguay experienced a large increase of refugees, most of who came from Italy and Spain. Within a decade or two the population had increased by 438,500, leading towards an upswing in their economy, due to the need for more livestocks and exports.

A famous 330 feet high building in the captial of Uruguay, Montevideo. It was built over the location at which Gerardo Matos Rodríguez ( A famous Uruguayan musician ) wrote his most famous tango, called La Cumparsita.

La Mano, translated to The Hand in English, is a large structure built of concrete, plastic, and metal mesh, within Punta del Este. It was made by Mario Irarrázabal, who made it during a building competitiong, and to also symbolize a drowning hand, warning of the rought waters.

A president who was elected in 1989, and served for 5 years. Along with him and one other previous president, Julio María Sanguinetti, they helped keepall the previous reforms in tact, pushing forward by improving social security, education, and public safety.
