    Abraham Lincoln became president and was against slavery which lead to a majority of the population being against slaves aswell. This lead to the South seceding.
  • South constitution is created

    South constitution is created
    At a convention in Montgomery, Alabama, the seven seceding states created the Confederate Constitution, This was due to the Northern states being against slavery and the South wanted to perpetuate the institution of slavery. Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Texas and South Carolina were the states that seceded.

    This was a crucial battle held in Chattanooga, Tenn. This victory gave the North control of the railroads centered in Chattanooga. The South now had only one east-west route.

    General Sherman continued his march through Georgia to the sea. He cut himself off from his source of supplies, letting his troops live off the land. His men made a route 300 miles in length and 60 miles wide through Georgia. General Sherman was a brutal fighter and made sure of destroying factories, bridges, railroads, and public buildings on his route.
