    Colonial Times Review
    To review what we have learned about colonial times, students will watch the empressr presentation. It is important they have a solid understanding of what life was like during this point in our nations history before we move into the events that led to the American Revolution. Duration - 1 day
  • The French & Indian War

    The French & Indian War
    Students will learn about the French and Indian War. They will see how Great Britain gained control of the land west of the Appalachian Mountains and more and more settlers soon began moving onto these new lands. We will read page 100 in "Our Nation" and discuss it. I will then read aloud "The French and Indian War" by Betsy Maestro and further discuss the importance of this war. Duration - 1 day.
  • The Proclamation of 1763

    The Proclamation of 1763
    Students will learn that even though many of the colonists helped defeat the French in the French and Indian War, the king of England, King George, ruled that colonists were no longer allowed to settle on land west of the Appalachian Mountains. We will read and discuss "Our Nation" page 100 in class. Assignment - To access understanding of the two prior lessons, students a summary of the French and Indian War, and what it meant for the colonists when the war was over. Duration - 2 days
  • The Sugar Act of 1764

    The Sugar Act of 1764
    Students will learn what a tariff is and that the Sugar Act of 1764 said colonists must pay a tariff on goods such as molasses and sugar. We will read page 101 in "Our Nation" and discuss it. Duration - 1 day
  • The Stamp Act of 1765

    The Stamp Act of 1765
    Students will learn that the Stamp Act of 1765 placed a tax on all printed materials, such as newspapers, stamps, and legal documents. I will read aloud - "The Stamp Act of 1765" by Michael Burgen to start the lesson. We will then read page 102 in "Our Nation."   • Boycotting and Petitions

    Boycotting and Petitions
    Students will learn what it means to boycott something and what petitions are. This conversation will be guided by the guiding question of this curriculum study, considering the sacrafices that were being made by the colonists was freedom worth fighting for? We will read page 103 "Our Nation" and discuss it. Assignment - To access what students have learned about the Stamp Act, students will complete the "Main Ideas & Details" graphic organizer. Duration - 2 days

    The Townshend Acts
    Students will learn that these acts taxed imported goods, such as glass, tea, and paint. We will read page 103 of "Our Nation" and discuss it. Assignment - Using timetoast.com, students in the computer lab will construct their own timeline of the events we have studied so far that led to the American Revolution. Duration - 1 day
  • The Boston Massacre

    The Boston Massacre
    The events of the Boston Massacre will be gone over in much detail. I will read aloud "The Boston Massacre" by Michael Burgan. We will discuss the events of the Boston Massacre. Duration - 1 day
  • The Tea Act

    The Tea Act
    Students will learn that in 1773, Parliament passed the Tea Act. This forced the colonists to buy tea from the British and no one else. We will read page 104 in "Our Nation" and discuss the Tea Act. Duration - 2 days
  • The Boston Tea Party

    The Boston Tea Party
    Students will learn that to get back at the English government for the Tea Act, several colonists disguised themselves as Mohawk Native Americans and boarded three British ships. When on board, they tied up the ships’ workers and then dumped 342 chests of British tea into Boston Harbor. I will read aloud "The Boston Tea Party" by Steven Kroll and we will discuss this historic event. Assignment - Students will be asked to summarize the Boston Massacre. Duration - 1 day
  • The Coercive Acts

    The Coercive Acts
    In 1774, Parliament passed the Coercive Acts as punishment for the Boston Tea Party. Students will learn how King George ordered the ports of Boston to be closed until the colonists pay for the tea they had dumped into the water. We will read page 104 in "Our Nation" and discuss it. Assignment - Students will complete the "Drawing Conclusions" graphic organizer found here - http://kmilliken.wikispaces.com/Assignments. Duration - 2 days

    Lexington and Concord: The Start of the Revolutionary War
    Students will learn what final event brought on the start of the Revolutionary War, the events of Lexington and Concord. Textbook - We will read page 105 of "Our Nation" and discuss the events of Lexington and Concord. Assignment - Students will complete the "Rank Order" graphic organizer, found here - http://kmilliken.wikispaces.com/Assignments Duration - 2 days
  • Collaboration Assignment

    Collaboration Assignment
    Collaboratively, two students will work together to summarize an event of their choosing that led to the American Revolution. Students will visit the following website for specific assignment details... http://mrmillikensclass.primarypad.com/Events_That_Led_To_The_American_Revolution This assignment will eventually lead to the creation of an online newspaper. Duration - 2 days to complete the first part. Additional time to complete the online newspaper.
  • Final Project Assignment Revealed

    Final Project Assignment Revealed
    Students will be assigned their final project for this unit of study. They will create an electronic book (EBook) about the events that led to the American Revolution. I am expecting all major events are included with detailed summaries and pictures of each. This will amount to being "Part 1" of their book because when we finish studying the actual Revolutionary War, they will do this again. The finished product will be a digital book. Duration: 28 days to complete it.
  • Final Projects Due

    Final Projects Due
    All EBooks should be completed by this date. I will review them and use them as an assessment for this unit.
