    Peopling the Americas

    Europeans came to the Americas thousands of years before Columbus. Nomadic hunters crossed Beringia into North America more than 12,000 years ago. This relates to the topic of settlement-the establishment of a community in an otherwise uninhabited area
  • Moving Toward Independence

    By issuing the Declaration of Independence, adopted by the Continental Congress, the 13 American colonies severed their political connections to Great Britain. This relates to the topic of diplomacy- managing international relationships by a country’s representatives because the U.S. had many conflicts with other nations to get to this point.
  • Missouri Compromise

    Congress passed a bill granting Missouri statehood as a slave state under the condition that slavery was to be forever prohibited in the rest of the Louisiana Purchase north of the 36th parallel, which runs approximately along the southern border of Missouri. This relates to the concept of compromise- agreement of a dispute that is reached by each side making concessions.
  • South Carolina Secedes from the Union

    South Carolina became the first slave state in the south to declare that it had seceded from the United States. This relates to the topic of conflict- a serious disagreement, argument, or crisis because this lead to an entire disunion.
  • Emancipation Proclamation

    This was a presidential proclamation and executive order to free all slaves in the United States. It was issued by President Abraham Lincoln, which is why this event relates to the topic of leadership- being in a position to lead a group of people.
  • Progress/Moving Forward

    Carnegie and Rockefeller were just two of many captains of industries. They were leaders in the steel and oil industries. The men and industries relate to the concept of progress- moving forward or changing. These items helped push America forward technologically.
  • Railroads

    Railroads played a large role in the development of the United States from the industrial revolution in the North-east. This relates to the concept of the American Dream- the idea that every US citizen should have an equal opportunity to achieve success and prosperity through hard work, determination, and initiative. It does this because the railroads helped the American economy to grow.
