  • The Second Great Awakening

    In 1800, the Second Great Awakening began. A wave of religious fervor swept over the country and women became more involved in religion during the Second Great Awakening. It was a time when many forms of christianity were formed making them different types of American religion.
  • Free school

    During 1825-1850 tax-supported public education. Americans eventually saw they had to educate their children because the children were the future. The teachers of the schools were mostly men and did not know how to teach. There were not very many schools in the U.S. because of their high costs to communities.
  • Jackson is elected President

    In 1828, democratic-republican Andrew Jackson was received most of the votes from the south which made him to be elected as President. This is important, because as a President, Jackson did many things of great significant.
  • Age of Reform

    During the 1830s-1850s, people started to realize and demeaning and dehumanizing prisons and mental health hospitals were.Society began to think that prisons should reform as well as punish.
    Dorothy Dix was a woman traveled the country, visited different asylums, released a report on insanity and asylums, and her protests resulted in improved conditions for the mentally ill. In 1848, she asked Congress to get lands especially for those mentally ill.
  • The Trail of Tears

    Jackson decided to move the 5 civilized tribes west in order to expand and to "preserve" their culture. In 1830, congress passed the Indian Removal Act which moved thousands of natives east of the Mississippi (Oklahoma), and when moving the Cherokees, about 4,000 out of 14,000 of them to died along the arduous path. This is significant because once again, the oppression of the natives can be shown.
  • The March of Millions

    During the 1840s and 1850s, European immigrants came to the Americas because Europe was running out of room. Immigrants also came to America to escape the aristocratic caste and state church, and there was more opportunity to improve one's life.
