South Carolina became the first state to secede from the union inbthe year 1860. After this many states followed such as Mississippi, Florida, Georgia, Alabama and Louisiana.

On March 4th 1861, Abraham Lincoln was sworn into office as the sixteenth president of the United States. In his first inaugural address he addressed that one section of the country believes slavery was right meanwhile the other section believed it was wrong.

As the nation was beggining to expand its population started growing with it as well however not only was the population growing but so was the tension over slavery which ultimately led to the civil war.
