  • Absolutist phase (1814-1820)

    Spain returned to absolutism. Groups of liberals organised proninciamientos demanding the reinstatement of the constitution, but they were not successful. Many liberals were forced into exile and others were executed.
  • Liberal phase (1820-1823)

    The king was forced to reinstate the constitution. The Nattional Militia was created to defend the constitution and oppose absolutism. The Holly Alliance sent troops that restored absolutism.
  • Ominous decade (1823-1833)

    Political and economic problems in Spain led to the final crisis of the absolute monarchy.

    The regency of Maria Cristina

    She created a new liberal monarchy and supported some priviledge classes.
  • 1st Carlist war

    The Carlisty were defeated by the general army of espartero.

    The regency of Espartero (1840-1843)

    Moderate liberals took control of the government.

    The reign of Isabel II (1843-1868)

    She established a liberal constitutional monarchy and the crown was retained power, but this power was shared with the Cortes. The queen was supported by the liberal political parties, various constitutions were approved and military participated actively in politics.

    Six years of democracy (1868-1874)

    A military revolt began. It was known as glorious revolution. Isabel II was forced into exile, new political period began (democracy).
