    U.S.S Maine
    McKinley ordered the U.S.S. Maine to bring home Americans from Cuba to protect them and property. In the harbor of Havana, the ship blew up killing more than 260 men. Newspaper claimed the Spanish were the ones to blame. This is important because it is was caused Americans to declare war on Spain to free Cuba.

    Rough Riders
    The Rough riders were a volunteer cavalry in the Spanish-American War under Leonard Wood and Theodore Roosevelt. They trained as cavarly but fought on foot because they didnt have enough time to get horses to Cuba. This is important because the rough riders helped win battles especially the battale of Saverejo and San Juan Hill.

    Foracker Act
    The Foracker Act ended military rule and set up a civil government. The United State's president was allowed to appoint Puerto Rico's governor and members of the upper house of its legislature. Puerto Ricans could elect only the members of the legislature's lower house. This is important because it helped uset up a government between us and
    Puerto Rico.

    The purpose of this organization was to ban child labor from state to state . Childeren were hired in factories to work in harsh conditions wher their small hands made it easier to handle small parts and tools. Childeren also receive lower wages than adults. This is important because it reduced the deaths and injuries in factories and eventually helped make factory conditions better.

    Pure Food and Drug Act
    Congress passed this act in 1906, which made it mandatory for all foods and medicines to be labeled properly of what they contain. It is believed that when people are given accurate information about the labels, they will act wisely. This is important because people know what they are actually eating or taking and if they are alergic to something they know if it's a food or medication.

    National Association for the Advancement of Colored People was created by African American who joined with prominent white reformers in New York. By 1914, over 6,000 members were apart of this organization. They aimed to have equality among the races. They were upset about the progressive indifference to African Americans. This is important because it was a start to creating equality among any type of race.

    The Seventeenth Amendment to the Constitution established direct election of U.S. senators by popular votes. Before this, each state's legislature had chosen its own senators. This is important because senators wer now elected the people instead of just the states legislature.

    While visiting the capital of Bosnia, Sarajevo, Ferdinand and his wife, Sophie, were driving through the city and were shot by the Serbian nationalist Gacrilo Princip. Princip was apsrt of the Black Hand, which is a group supporting Serbian nationalism. This is important because it causedAustrias-Hungary to declare of what they thought would be a short war on Serbia.

    Opening of the Panama Canal
    The canal reduced travel time for ships by providing a shortcut betwwen the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. More than 1,000 merchant ships passed through the canal during it's first year. This is important because it increased trade and made traveling easier, safer, and quicker.

    Selective Service Act
    Passed by Congress, this act required men to register with the government to be randomly selected for military service. 24 million men had been registered by the end of 1918 under this act. This is important because it helped the government meet the needs for more fighting power .

    After German U-boat attacks, American Vice Admiral William S. Sims advised the British to attempt the convoy system. A heavy guard of destroyers escorted merchant ships back and forth across the Atlantic Ocean. This is important because it helped protect American ships traveling and it cut ship losses in half.

    The food administration was set up under Herbert Hoover. He wanted to conserve food instead of rationing it. He asked for people to have one day a week, "meatless", two days, "wheatless", one "sweetless" and two other days, "porkless". Restaurants removed surgar bowls and set out bread after the first course. After school kids would go
    work in "victory gardens". This is important because it helped us win the war and send more food to the allies.

    There was a huge demand for work in the north and a large part of America's African American population came from the rural south to the industriaul north to work in war industries. Families also left the south to live better lives, higher wages, and receive fair treatment. After the war, those who migrated north lost their jobs in the south to white people. This is important because African Americans helped us during the war by working in war factories.
