    Giuseppe Garibaldi was a revolutionary hero in Italy. He fought for the unification of Italy, and played a vital role in the capturing of much of the peninsula. Without him and his thousand red shirts, Italy would not have been unified.

    Reforms took place during this time in the Papal States, Lucca, Tuscany, and the Kingdom of Sardinia that intended to quiet the revolution. Instead these reforms sparked the revolutionary movement in 1848 in Sicily, Naples, Rome, Florence, Milan, Venice, and Turin, These impowering movements would increase nationalism because the rebels are joining together agaisnt a common enemy and for a common cause.

    The kingdom of Piedmont-Sardinia adopted a liberal constitution. This promoted the idea of unification under the Piedmont-Sardinia government amongst the liberal middle class of Italy.

    Camillio Di Cavour
    Victor Emmanuel II named Camillio di Cavour his prime minister. He was a very cunning statesman who worked hard to promote and expand Piedmont's power.
  • Driving out Austira

    Napoleon assisted in the driving out of Austria from the northern Italian provinces. War ignited, but with the help of Napoleon, quick victories were had agaisnt Austria.
  • Garibaldi and the Red Shirts

    Garibaldi and the Red Shirts
    Giuseppe Garibaldi and other Italian nationalists were recently helped by the unification of northern Italy after the Austria wars. These rebels captured Sicily and agreed to unite the southern areas he captured.
  • The Seven Weeks War

    The seven weeks war against Austria resulted in a stronger feeling of nationalism for Italy, and a strong relationship with Prussia. This also resulted in the gaining of Venetia by Italy.
  • Franco-Prussian War

    Napoleon III had to withdraw his troops from Rome due to his war waged with Prussia. This removal of forces allowed Italy to swoop in and conquer Rome seamlessly. This increases nationalism even further because Italy has more victories, and gains a very important portion of land.

    Italy was officially a kingdom under Emmanuel as the first King of Italy. This kingdom was still missing Vatican (Papal Control). This increased nationalism, as Italy became one unified country.
