  • Northern States in Italy Demostrate Nationalism

    In various elections between 1859 and 1860, all of the northern states in Italy voted to join the Kingdom of Sardinia, demostrating nationalistic ideas towards the kingdom.

    Second Italian War of Independence

    Between Austria and Kingdom of Sardinia, France came to help Sardinia because they wanted to join them. Napeoleon joined in by leading the French. The Austrians were defeated in two separate battles and surrendered.
  • Thousand Red Shirts

    Giuseppe Garibaldi came out of his retirement to free Sicily and Naples from the Bourbon King. This is an example of Nationalism because Italy could finally be a united naiton.
  • Italy is Unified

    Italy was finally united in 1861, and Victor Emmanuel was the first king of Italy.
  • Venice

    Venice becomes a part of Italy in 1866, along with the Austrian Province of Venetia.
  • Papal States Conquered

    Italian forces took over the Papal States in 1870, and with this vitory, Rome had become a part of Italy. Rome later became the capital of Italy.
