Louie and Phil are beaten for telling guards that they believed the Allies will win. The guards broke bones and severely beat them. The instigators were beaten after that as punishment for the unnecessary violence.

Louie and Phil were delivered to Ofuna, a torture facility where they were classified as "unarmed combatants against the state" not as POW's granting the Japanese to do whatever they wanted to them.

The rations at Ofuna were very small and as Louie was in the worst shape with the least amount of food and the least amount of clothes he fell ill. The POWs started stealing more food for him an Phil.

The Captives were previously not allowed to speak. The new rule allowed veteran soldiers to speak to each other when outside and under supervision of guards.

Louie and other Soldiers plan to escape and sail to a friendly piece of China and get home

The Camp's Duck being violated and killed ruined the men's moral. Louie said that he would never forget what happened to that duck and said that it was a great horror to see.

Louie is moved to a POW camp where the treatment is assurmingly better than what happens at the Ofuna camp
