It was invented by Greeks and Romans in the 1700s. It was invented in Grecia and Roma. In the 1700s it became popular to carry wood and oilcloth models as protection from the rain.

Hanways

1750

It was invented by Jonah Hanway. It was invented in 1750 in England. Only women carried umbrellas. By the late 1700s however, it became more acceptable for men to carry "hanways."

Steel ribbed kind umbrella

1852

It was invented by Samuel Fox in 1852. We use them on the beach, while playing golf, and on our patios and decks.
