The Battle of Vicksburg was a siege of Vicksburg, Mississippi between May 18 and July 4, 1863. Vicksburg was the last city in Confederate control on the Mississippi River. The city surrendered to the Union on July 4. After Vicksburg, the Confederacy was cut in half and the Union controlled the Mississippi River.
