Italy gains national unity

Between 1859 and 1870 Italy gaine national unity. They became independent. Nationalist feelings skyrocketed because of this.

Elections

Mussolini created the Fasci party, they lost the election to the socialists however. However they feared the Socialists would damge the economy so Mussolini was given a spot in the government coalition.

National Fascist Party takes over Italian government

Oct 28, 1922

On October 8th, 1922, a coup was attempted against the Italian government by the Fasci, led by Mussolini. It failed, it did however lead to an agreement between the King and Brnito Mussolini. The agreemenrt made the National Fascist Party head of government.

Greek Islands are captured

Mussolini takes over several Greek islands. He encourages irredentism among the Italian people. Refers too the Mediterrean as "Our Sea"

Benito Mussolini comes into power

Benito Mussolini came into power when Italy was in financial shambles. He was the leader of the National Fascist Party of Italy. He believe IItaly to be the ruling country of the area. HE also believed the regions surrounding Italy belonged to them only. He referred to the Mediterranean as "MAre nostrum" which translates to "Our sea"

Italy invades Ethiopia

In late 1935, Mussolini opted to invade a poorly defended Ethiopia. He invaded Ethiopia because he wanted to expand the Italian empire

Italy joins the Axis

Jun 10, 1940

Italy joins Germany and begins to adopt imperialist policies. They relied heavily on Germany for assistance with combative action however.

Mussolini is replaced

Jun 13, 1943

During the early years of WW2, Italy had been on the side of the Axis. Due to bad performance by the Italian army with Mussoloni at the head, Mussolini was forcefully resigned from government.
