Gold was first found by James W. Marshall at Sutter's Mill in Coloma, California. The first thing he discoverd was a gold nugget. He found gold in a river/stream. Finding gold was a hard process. You would have to dig a big pan in the dirt at the bottom and then you would have to wash ot everything else and hope the gold stays in the bottom. Anyways gold was valuable and people traded many things for gold. -
