Congress allowed 2 companies to start building the railroads. The Union Pacific would form the tracks of Omaha, Nebraska across the plains and cut through the rockies. While the Central Pacific would make east Sacramento over to the Sierra Nevada mountains.Costing $16,000 per level track and $48,000 for the mountains. Congress promised the companies 6,400 acres of federal land for every mile track that they would do. So they started to go into compition but did not know where to meet the tracks. -
