This marks the start of the Federalist and Anti-Federalist parties.
Federalist: Led by Alexander Hamilton, vied for a strong national government and appealed to financial, manufacturing, and commercial interests.
Anti-Federalist: Led by Thomas Jefferson, wanted smaller government and had a strict constructionist view of the Constitution. They had more sympathy towards the common man. The Anti-Federalists were also known as the Democratic-Republicans. -
The Democratic-Republicans, who were Jefferson's anti-Federalist party, held almost unopposed power until the mid 1820s.

Jacksonian democrats emerged around the 1828 Election for Andrew Jackson as president. They restructured suffrage for white men over 21 and opposed aristocracy. They also changed multiple federal institutions.
-
After the Civil War ended, the Democrats were heavily crippled. Thus, the Republicans controlled the federal government for an extended 75 years. The Democrats turned their agenda to the south. Republicans, during this time, mostly were focused on having a unified country and using the Federal government's power to prevent slavery and other abuses of power.

The Great Depression changed the socioeconomic state of the world and allowed for Democrat Roosevelt to be elected as president. Roosevelt democrats were southerners, common folk, farmers, and unions for the advancement of the working man. They focused mostly on social welfare and government economic programs to help the country out of the depression.

After the southern strategy and the political party switch in the late 1900s, the modern political parties were formed. Democrats are more liberal, open to change, favor minimum wage and progressive taxation, a decrease in military spending, people being socially responsible, and abortion being legal. Republicans are conservative, adhering to tradition, no increase of taxes, increased military spending, individual rights and rule of law, and that abortion should be illegal.
