Hazel and Agustus watch a movie then Agustus recommends Hazel a book. She agrees to read it but only if Agustus reads her favorite book, "An Imperial Affliction¨

The book ends in a cliffhanger in the middle of the sentence. Augustus and hazel wonder about the end of the story a lot. The author Peter Van Houten never wrote anything more than the book , no epilogue or anything

Hazel is ill with lung cancer and does not want to do anything or go anywhere. Her mom wants her to get out the house so she makes her go to the cancer support group at their church.

Hazel had tried to contact the van Houten before but has not been successful. I Gustus found an email that was replied to by Van Houtens assistant. Augustus gives Hazel the email address to the assistant and they send an email.

after a while peter van Houten‘s assistant replies to the email. She says that the ending of the book is too secret , so Augustus and hazel must go to Amsterdam

Augustus and hazel with her mom travel to Amsterdam. The wish foundation peace for all the expenses for the trip.

in order to hear the ending of the story, Hazel and Augustus must travel to Amsterdam. They do not have the finances to make the trip. Augustus has one wish from the wish foundation, and uses it to go to Amsterdam and all the expenses are paid for. Hazel cannot use her wish because she had already used it to a trip to Disneyland with her family.

Hazel and Augustus eat at a very expensive restaurant. Augustus wheres that tuxedo that was picked out for his funeral when everybody thought that he would die. They both have a good time nonetheless.

before letting them in, Peter slams the door and goes to complain to his assistant.

Peter tells his assistant that he has no intent to tell the two the end of the story. He says that he never believed that they would actually come to Amsterdam.

Hazel continuously asks Peter about the end of the book, but Peter keeps giving rude and obnoxious comments in return. Sometimes he even just ignores the questions all together.

peter’s assistant realizes how rude Peter is being and that Peter is an alcoholic. She quits her job right on the spot

Augustus‘ cancer has been rediscovered and is getting worse from day to day. Doctors say that he doesn’t have much left, so hazel is very disappointed.

everybody goes home from their trip to Amsterdam

after weeks of being sick, Augustus dies. everybody is very devastated, especially Hazel. Hazel cries for days and days.

it’s very hard for Hazel to speak at Augustus‘s funeral. She pushes through her heart, and speaks at his funeral. Peter shows up at the funeral and Hazel is very offended. Peter explained to her that the reason he attended to the funeral was because of a letter he had received from Augustus prior to his passing. In his letter, Augustus asked Peter to attend his funeral after his passing

Isaac tells Hazel that Augustus was writing a letter weeks before he died. Hazel looks everywhere for the letter. She then realized that Isaac was telling her about the letter that Peter received. Hazel emails peters assistant, and his assistant is happy to help. Peters assistant email is Hazel the letter. The letter writes asking if Peter could write a euloug for Hazel. The book ends with Hazel reading the last line of the letter.
