May- Parliament tries to end secularist and Islamist conflict by bringing the national election date closer. Parliament approves and amendment that states a president can be elected by popular vote, but the amendment is vetoed by the current president. A bomb blast kills 100 people in Ankara, but the PKK denies responsibility.
