  • Mohamed Bouazizi set himself on fire

Mohamed Bouazizi set himself on fire
IMohamed Bouaziz, 26 year old man, set himself on fire. He lived in Sidi Bouzid and he used to sell vegetables. One day, a policeman took away his vegetable cart because he was unlicensed. The policeman wanted him to pay a fine of 10 dollars. He went to the local municipality officers in order for them to help him but they refused to see him. Mohamed then out of the building, poured fuel on his body and burnt himselft. This is very important because the Arab spring started from this event.
  • Manifestations

    Manifestations

After Mohamed's death, all his family was very sad but proud. His mother says: "He lives on, his name lives on. I am proud of what happened in Tunis, I am proud that he is known throughout the Arab world.” A lot of manifestation were happening. Men manifested their anger. His brother says: "Now, we expect things to change. I want my freedom and my rights. I want to work. I want a job." I chose this event because it shows how people stand up for what they believe in.
  • President Ben Ali Flees

President Ben Ali who had ruled for 23 years flees Tunisia on January 14 with his family to go to Saudi Arabia. The day he left, a curfew was set from 6.pm to 6.am, policemen beat up protesters… People were extremely happy when Ben Ali had left the country because many Tunisians and graduates did not have jobs... Tunisians' main saying was: “Ben Ali dégage”, which meant, “Ben Ali get out”. This is a very important event because everything changed since that moment on.
  • Fouad Mebazza

    Fouad Mebazza
After Ben Ali, Prime Minister Mohamed Ghannouchi acted as president for an extremely short time. On January 15, it became official that Ben Ali resigned his power. Also, it was said that Ghannouchi was not permitted to take over and so the power was handed to Fouad Mebazza. Fouad Mebazza acted as president from January 15 2011 till December 13 2011. It is very weird to see how Mohamed Ghannouchi decided to take power by himself. The ruler changed 3 times in two days which I find very interesting
  • Ennahda

    Ennahda
After the collapse of the Ben Ali government, the Ennahda party came to power on 1 March 2011. They ruled for 2 years. During the elections, the people wanted the Islamic party to take power. They then realized that the Ennahda was a bad party. They did not know how to rule and Tunisians were unhappy with them. Many women disliked them because the Ennahda tried to put laws against women’s right. This also led to the decrease of tourism in Tunisia. Women had a big part in this which is interesting
  • Mehdi Jomaa

    Mehdi Jomaa
After the Islamic party gave up their power, the Tunisian government all agreed to elect Mehdi Jomaa as prime minister until the new elections. He was elected on the 13th of December 2013. This is happening until now and it is interesting because we know who is governinn now but we do not know what will happend next and if the people will like him or not.
