Originally, the Colomb Cree Nation people were part of the James Roberts First Nation of Montreal Lake, Saskatchewan. The Colomb Cree Nation was formed in 1910 as a group of natives separated from the Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation of Saskatchewan.

    Witchekan Lake Cree First Nation signed Treaty 6 on November 21, 1950. Reserve land for the band had been surveyed about 90 km northeast of North Battleford many years before; today it has 6,520.1 hectare of land. Economic activities include agriculture, forestry, trapping, and fishing; with its successful acquisition of the Bapaume Community Pasture in 1997, this band was the first in Saskatchewan to acquire a Crown community pasture through a Treaty Land Entitlement Agreement.
