    THESIS

    Although the continuity of women's social structure to lower roles (in society) was common in the Asian, American, & African areas during the time of 600 to 1450, a change of women's freedom/rights as early as the Song Dynasty till the Mongol Empire shows a change of improvement of women's right (in some periods and civilizations) at this time.

    Tang Dynasty (618-907)

    The Tang Dynasty lasted from 618 to 907, where women were treated not as equals to men, but not nearly as horrible as they have been compared to other cultures. Women could and were allowed to have positions in court, could trade, become poets & many more.
    This event is social because it explains how women were treated in this social structure.
    This event shows change because it continues the trend of women being treated (comparatively) well.

    Heian Period (794-1185)

    The Heian Period started in Japan in 794. Women in this period were actually relatively free. Women were allowed to become poets/writers, help their husband with his work, & weren't kept in their homes. An example is the woman who wrote the Tale of Genji.

    This event is a change event because it continues the trend of the time of women not being treated as poorly compared to other time periods.

    The Koryo Dynasty was founded in 918 in Korea. Women in this dynasty were NOT treated well. Only a small percent of women were allowed to participate in trade (or some other type of freedom). If not, most would rarely ever leave their home.Women were often segregated from men as well.
    This event is a continuity event, because it displays particularly poor treatment of women during this time period.

    When Vietnam gained independence around the 10th Century, women had more freedom. At this time their Chinese counterparts didn't have as much freedom as them, but the Vietnamese women were able to form a rebellion.This rebellion was led by the Trung Sisters.

    This event shows change, because it shows women having more rights/freedoms than most others during this time.

    During the early Song Dynasty in the 10th Century, women's rights continued to improve in China. They were given opportunities for work, and even though they had arranged marriages, women had the power to divorce - this was a very large improvement.

    Around the 13th Century in the late Song Era in China, the treatment of women began to decline.Women's overall rank as a role of society was lessened & were given less opportunities. An example of this was the shameful foot binding women were put through.

    Around the 14th century in the Aztec Empire, women weren't treated as poorly as they were in other societies. Women in the Aztec Empire didn't have to be ranked low in society and could inherit land. Women were also highly valued because of their skills of weaving.

    Early in the 14th Century, the women in the Incan Empire, located in South America, were treated poorly due to their beliefs & rituals - such as being forced to serve their religion & state, and to sew for the government to create cloth. Young girls would often be drafted to be concubines.

    This event shows continuity, because it tells how women were poorly treated in the Inca society.

    Around the 14th Century in the Mongol Empire in China, women were treated well.The Mongolian women had property rights, could move as they pleased (because of the loss of foot binding) and were very independent with themselves.
