The plane was originally designed to be converted into a cargo plane.One of the main requirements for the military transport was for there to be a nose loading cargo door with easy access to the main deck.

    1970 Concorde
    the Concorde was the first super sonic passenger carrying commercial airplane built jointly by aircraft manufacturers in Great Britain and France. the Concorde made its first transatlantic flight on the 26th of September 1973, it introduced the worlds first supersonic passenger service on January the 21st 1976. The British Airways were initially flying the aircraft from London to Bahrain and Air France flying it from Paris to Rio de Janeiro. Both airlines added regular service to Washington D.C.

    Ryanair’s first cabin crew recruits had to be shorter than 5ft2 in order to be able to work in the tiny cabin of the aircraft. the first flight was from Dublin to London Luton. it was founded on the 28th November 1984 in Dublin Ireland by Tony Ryan. Ryanair carried 82,000 passengers in its first year in operation. In 2016, Ryanair was the largest European airline by scheduled passengers flown, and carried more international passengers than any other airline.

    In 1989 Tim Berners-Lee invented the World Wide Web and he wrote the first web client and server in 1990. He also envisioned that his invention could, in the wrong hands, become a destroyer of worlds.

    EasyJet was founded by Sir Stelios Haji-Ioannou to offer low priced flights in Europe. EasyJet opened their first headquarters EasyLand at Luton Airport. On 23 October, EasyJet took their first ever booking at the telephone reservation centre. They were supported by the advertising campaign "Making flying as affordable as a pair of jeans - £29 one way". In August 1996 they launched their first ever flight promotion with over 4 million calls in 4 days.

It took the city almost five years to get back to their original visitors but it has continued to grow since then with 13.5 international visitors in 2018

    On December 26th 2004 an undersea earthquake caused a series of large tsunami waves reaching up to 30 meters tall. The disaster had a huge impact on 14 different countries including Indonesia, Thailand and India, there was a destruction of what would add up to $508 million and many tourists were caught in the tsunami which lead to many people cancelling their holidays to those affected countries. In 2005 Thailand visitor numbers decreased to 11.6 million but reached 13.8 million in 2006.

    In 2008 the world was hit by a massive financial crisis leading to many markets crashing and holiday makers dealing with tight budgets. straight away following this recession there was an increase by 17% in British holidays and a decrease in outbound travel. it was not until 2014 when overseas an abroad visits from the UK began to increase again. abroad holidays increased by 4% and staycations decreased by 1.3% in a year.

    Icelandic Ash Cloud
    A series of volcanic eruptions in Eyjafjallajokull, Iceland caused an ash cloud which caused havoc on air travel in Europe due to worries that the ash cloud would damage aircraft engines if they tried to travel through it. Due to this 107,000 flights were cancelled over and eight day period, affecting roughly 10 million passengers.

    Game of Thrones is one of the biggest events in history TV, they have filmed in Croatia, Northern Ireland, Iceland and Spain. Many fans of the show will visit these places each year as inspiration to see where their favourite programme is filmed. This then brings income into those countries.

    The UKs decision to leave the European Union made the visitors to the UK fall by 5.3% in the 2018. How Brexit will effect the travel industry both inside and outside the UK is still unkown.

    Due to COVID 19 there were many travel restrictions put in place which had a huge impact on the travel and tourism industry. Over 700,000 people lost their jobs during these times and many holidays and flights had to be cancelled. This is an absolute tragedy for the travel industry due to so much money being lost and so many people fearing to travel abroad.
