Lieutenant-Colonel Thomas-Louis Tremblay made some progress by being one of the 22nd Batallion, which made French-Canadian soldiers able to be promoted to higher ranks until on July 1st, 1916, when they lost 801 men on the first day at the Battle of Somme.

Women in the war made some progress like Mae Belle Sampson. She was one of the first nurses allowed to go overseas as part of the Canadian Army Medical Corps. However, on June 27, 1918, she was killed when a hospital ship was bombed by the German's.
