Timeline: The Spirit of Independence

  • The sugar act

    This was the first-ever tax the British imposed on the American colonies, mainly to gain revenue from them. The colonies did not like the fact that they weren't included in the parliament. Which led to anger from the colonies
  • The stamp Act

    The stamp act was a policy that would allow the British to put a tax on printed things such as newspapers, documents, and magazines. The Colonist did not take this tax lightly and quickly turned on the British.
  • Boston Massacre

    Boston Massacre
    A riot begins to happen between the Colonist and the redcoats, The colonist begin to threaten the Redcoats but the redcoats begin to fire back. They ended up killing 5 Colonist. This sparks even more hatred towards the redcoats.
  • The Boston Tea party

    The Boston Tea party
    The Boston tea party occurred because the American colonist was not included during the making of The Stamp Act. This Made King George send Redcoats to Boston and made them stay in the Colonist house, which made them Furious. He also closed down the Boston harbor.
  • The intolerable act

    This is a law that would close down the Boston harbor, in the British view they thought it would make the Colonist more discipline bu instead it made them want to fight for their rights even more.
  • First Continental congress

    First Continental congress
    this is the first time the colonies got together as one and decided what to do about the Intolerable act. they ended up boycotting all British good which ended up hurting Britain
  • Paul revere

    Paul revere warnings to the Americans saved the colonist from British by warning them ahead of time that they were coming. If it wasn't for him America could've lost due to not being prepared
  • Battle of Concord

    Battle of Concord
    This is the first battle that America won against the British, as the British retreated it gave the Americans hope that they could win the war.
  • The declaration of independence

    Thomas Jefferson and a couple of other people gather around and begin to write down the declaration of independence, This paper will cut the remaining ties with England and would declare the American colonies their own nation
  • Yorktown - British surrender

    Cornwallis walked his men to Yorktown, Virginia expecting British ships but they never arrived. Goerge Washington and his men then begin to fight the British until they run out of supplies and surrender to him. finally giving America their freedom.
