Ian and Barley Lightfoot are two elf brothers who live in New Mushroom town. Ian is just turning 16 and is in highschool and Barley is 19 and out of highschool.

Laurel, Ian and Barley's mom, gives Ian a gift from Wilden, they boys dad who died before Ian was born. This gift was a magical staff , with the rare Phoenix gem and a letter with how to do a visitation spell that can bring their father back for one day.

Ian accidentally casts the spell, but only the lower half of his dad Wilden's body appears before the gem disintegrates.

Ian and Barley have to find another gem to fully resurrect their dad's body. They have heard that the Manticore, a beast, has a map to another gem. They visit her and at first she doesn't want to give them the map but then she decides she is bored with her life.

Then, the Manticore and Laurel ( Ian and Barleys mom) go to steal from a pawn shop to get the Manticores famous sword and were succsesful.

Ian and Barley have to travel to the mountains. On the way, they have to escape the police and a motorcycle gang of pixies. Barley has to eventually sacrifice his van, Guinevere, to get away to the can continue.

After being able to continue following the map, the brothers follow statutes to a cave with monsters and obstacles. The final obstacle leads them right back to Ian's high school. Ian is very upset at Barley for this.

Ian rereads his list of things that he wishes he would have done with his father. He realizes his brother was his father figure growing up. They are running out of time before his dad permanently disappears.

Barley discovers the needed gem inside an historic fountain across the street from the high school and retrieves it. Unknowingly, it triggers a curse that creates a dragon from pieces of the school and other objects. Ian's magical staff is knocked into the ocean during the battle with the dragon.

Corey helps Laurel plunge the sword into the dragon's heart. This gives time for Ian to complete the spell. He decides to let his brother spend the last couple of minutes with their dad while he helps his mom defeat the dragon. Laurel is able to finally destroy the dragon.
