  • The Great Depression

    The Great Depression
    Cause: The great depression was caused by a market crash in October, 1929. Everybody lost money, everybody lost jobs, and the health care suffered. People could not afford to pay for health care and get the quality care that they needed. Some people thoguht it would be time to have a better system.
    Consequence: After this depression, people such as Tommy Douglas strengthened their efforts to try and fix this problem. This lead to the eventual creation of medicare or universal health care.
  • Hospital Insurance and Diagnostic Services Act

    Hospital Insurance and Diagnostic Services Act
    Cause: This is an act by the federal government that payed each province and territory half of what they need for health care. This may it easier for people to pay and it was a stepping stone for universal health care.
    Consequence: People were able to afford their health care in a better way. Peple realized that this was a better option for receivng treatment.
  • Saskatchewan Doctors Strike

    Saskatchewan Doctors Strike
    Cause: This strike was by all doctors in the province of saskatchewan to show that they were upset with the new universal health care system.
    Consequence: The strike failed and medicare was allowed to continue the way that it was. Without that strike failing. Our health sysytem today could have been quite different.
  • Canada Health Act

    Canada Health Act
    Cause: This act was a set of rules or criteria tthat ech province must meet for providing health care. This included universal health care to all persons who were not otherwised covered.
    Consequence: People were covered for all of their accidents or health problems and they didn't need to worry about whether or not they should go to the doctor because it might cost a lot. This was a major breakthrough in today's system.
  • Canada Health and Social Transfer

    Canada Health and Social Transfer
    Cause: This was a series of payments by the government to help pay for health care in each province.
    Consequence: Health ervices were improved, everybody benefited from the patients who had to pay less and the facilities that got paid better.
